Suzuki to enter World Rally Championship

Wed, 15 Mar 2006

Suzuki Motor Corporation has announced it is to enter the World Rally Championship (WRC) in August 2007.

It will introduce a new car to compete in the WRC based on the SX4 sports car which is to be made available in New Zealand at the end of this year.

Suzuki has developed a new all-wheel drive system for the race, incorporating a carbon disc clutch, five speed sequential gearbox and a two-litre J20 Suzuki engine.

"Suzuki is gaining stature as a major and expanding manufacturer of technically excellent, sporting and fun cars, like the new generation Swift," said said Tom Peck, general manager of marketing for Suzuki New Zealand.

"Campaigning the new model in the 2007 WRC will build the image and brand identity of Suzuki."

Suzuki have already met with great success in the Junior World Rally Championship, with its Ignis Super model winning first place in the 2004 drivers' Championship.

Their SX4 WRC prototype was revealed at the Geneva Motor Show alongside the commercial SX4.
