Speeding motorist is armless enough

Mon, 27 Mar 2006

Police in New Zealand got a surprise when the caught up with and stopped a speeding driver, as he had no arms.

The police flagged down the motorist to give him a caution for speeding, but when they went to speak to the man they discovered he had been driving with one foot on the pedals and the other on the steering wheel.

The 32-year-old unemployed man unsurprisingly had no car insurance or licence and had never even taken a test, claiming that he had been without arms since birth but had also been driving for years without incident.

He was banned from driving by police and fined NZ$170 (£60) for speeding.

A spokesperson for the police commented: "Obviously, driving at a speed like that, arms or not, you're just waiting for an accident."

The issue highlights the importance of having comprehensive car insurance for legal drivers, as one can never know who you will meet while on the road, regardless of your own driving abilities.
