SNP suggests limiting fuel prices

Thu, 27 Apr 2006

Scottish National Party leader Alex Salmond MP has tabled proposals that will protect motorists against rising fuel prices, as the price of unleaded gets close to £1 a litre.

The proposals suggest that as fuel prices increase on British forecourts, the amount of duty imposed on fuel should decrease, keeping prices steady.

This should not result in any loss of income from the government, as the increases in pump prices result in increases in revenue from VAT.

Mr Salmond MP, who will table the new proposals at the House of Commons this week, believes that an updated regulatory body will be required in order to ensure that petrol prices remain reasonable.

Mr Salmond said in a statement: "We need urgent government action to protect motorists and road hauliers from the worst effects of the soaring world oil price, and this proposal would see a double protection for motorists and the road haulage industry."

At present, fuel duties make up 60 per cent of petrol and diesel prices – a move meant to encourage motorists to give up their cars.

However, there are now concerns that the high price of crude oil has made the price of petrol rise to levels where most households are struggling to afford it.

This, on top of car insurance and road tax cost, is making running a car an increasingly expensive business.
