Sneaky thieves target luxury vehicles

Wed, 25 Jan 2006

Luxury car owners in Bradford are advised to check that their car insurance policies are up to date following a spate of thefts in the area.

West Yorkshire Police have been forced to implement Operation Hanoi in an attempt to stop criminals who have been slipping into homes in affluent areas of the city and making off with vehicle owners' car keys.

Around £2 million worth of cars have been stolen in the space of a month, police estimate.

"The problem is that there are far more people committing this type of crime than before because it is so easy. As cars get more advanced in their security systems, the only way to steal an expensive car these days is with keys," said Sergeant Karen Milner, who is working on the operation.

"It used to be an offence that only a select group of criminals would commit but it has moved away from that and it is now just as much an opportunist crime."

Police are also urging car owners to lock front and back doors and keep car keys out of sight. Those buying a high performance car from a private owner should double check to make sure the vehicle is not stolen.
