Siberian snow leaves drivers stranded
Wed, 28 Dec 2005
Adverse weather conditions in the south-east of England left many motorists stranded yesterday as a Siberian weather front covered many roads in the region in up to 5cms of snow.
Drivers in Kent, Norfolk, Essex, Suffolk and Sussex were all affected by the snow-fall, with warnings issued that motorists should consider staying indoors.
The Meteorological Office advised drivers to carry emergency food and water supplies, warm clothes, boots, de-icer spray and a spade with them in the car if a long-distance journey was attempted.
"The cold air coming from Siberia is full of energy when it first hits land and brings snow but loses energy as it heads inland," said Neil Harris, forecaster at the Met Office.
"But, even when it goes above freezing, the wind chill will make it feel cold and bitter."
Despite precautions - and highlighting the need for adequate car insurance in such weather - traffic was soon banked up on many routes as cars crawled along to avoid skids and accidents.
Gritter trucks and snow ploughs worked around the clock to keep traffic on major roads and motorways moving, but with more heavy snow forecast between East Sussex and Yorkshire, is seems likely that the current driving conditions are set to continue for some days to come.
