Sat-nav puts drivers in deep water
Thu, 20 Apr 2006
Satellite navigations systems have been guiding cars to cross a ford on the river Avon, trapping them in the water.
Satellite navigation systems are supposed to take all of the stress out of driving on Britain's roads, allowing us to keep our eyes on the road instead of looking at maps, and so avoiding those costly car insurance claims.
Recently however, drivers wishing to cross the river Avon in Wiltshire have found their satellite navigation systems guiding them into very deep water - the middle of an impassible ford.
The ford at Brook End is nick-named 'the splash', and can be crossed by high-riding vehicles in dry weather.
But after heavy rain, it can rise to over 1 metre high, flooding most passenger vehicles.
Road works on nearby roads meant that the ford was recommended as a diversion by many sat-navs, stranding one or two cars a week in the middle of the river.
Sat-nav systems have seen a five-fold increase in sales over the last two years, but experts warn that they are not fool-proof, and drivers must still pay great attention to where they are going.
