Satellite navigation systems break concentration

Tue, 21 Feb 2006

New research has found that in-car satellite navigation systems are leading motorists to lose their concentration while driving.

More than half of drivers admitted they took their eyes off the road to type details into their satellite navigation systems and one in ten said that they set off without programming their route.

The survey by a leading insurer found that 19 per cent of drivers lost concentration when driving due to the satellite system, compared with 17 per cent who used the old fashioned technique of map reading.

It was also revealed that many people are not preparing for long and unfamiliar journeys and are relying on the technology alone to get them to their destination.

New advice suggested for a future Highway Code by the government says: "There is a danger of driver distraction being caused by in-vehicle systems such as route guidance and navigation systems, congestion warning systems, PCs, multi-media, etc.

"Do not operate, adjust or view any such system if it will distract your attention while you are driving; you must exercise proper control of your vehicle at all times. If necessary find a safe place to stop first."

Keeping your eyes on the road will, of course, lead to safer driving and, with no insurance claims, cheaper car insurance.
