Sat nav sales continue to soar

Mon, 08 May 2006

There has been a huge increase in the number of satellite navigation systems sold in the UK, according to new market research.

The rising popularity of satellite navigation (sat nav) systems has seen the number of sales increase by over 500 per cent in the last two years, according to research carried out by market analysts Mintel.

According to Mintel's report, the sat nav industry is now worth some £305 million, compared with just £50 million two years ago, a figure that is even more impressive considering that the average price of a sat nav system has fallen from around £1,000 to £100 in that time.

Falling prices, however, can be only one factor in their surge in popularity, with the sheer convenience of just programming in your destination, compared with having to fumble around with big cumbersome maps, making sat nav the must-have gadget for the modern motorist.

"Sat nav systems are great for taking the hassle out of driving," said senior market analyst Matt King, commenting on the findings.

"This sector is set to continue to develop as prices fall and the technical capabilities improve – it is likely that sat nav will ultimately merge with in-car entertainment systems to create a technology 'hub' that will provide music and video content, navigation solutions and mobile communications."

However, concerns have been raised over the safety of using such systems on the road, as operating the systems whilst driving can make the chances of an accident – and a hefty claim on your car insurance – much more likely.
