'Santa' damages grandmother's car

Thu, 05 Jan 2006

A grandmother from Salford - Hazel Weaver - received a rather unwelcome surprise just before Christmas when she discovered her car had been damaged by a mystery intruder.

Horley Rotary Club – rather than Santa himself – was found to be the culprit however, after members managed to damage Ms Weaver's car as they carried out their festive collection.

Although mechanics full of the Christmas spirit agreed to repair the damage free of charge, the 52-year-old headteacher said that the incident had been "unfortunate".

"I think the sleigh just managed to clip my car as he turned round at the end of the road. I didn't see it happen, but I noticed at about 7.15pm that there were scrapes on the back end of it. It was only slight damage," she told a local Reigate newspaper.

"It's just very unfortunate, so I wasn't irate. It's one of those things you can joke about afterwards when it's all sorted out."

Ms Weaver added that the matter had prompted a laugh from both her friends and her car insurance company once the mystery had been solved.
