Rusty drivers cause 335,000 accidents a year

Thu, 30 Mar 2006

Motorists returning to the wheel after a break cause 335,000 accidents.

Research by a leading insurer found that a third of drivers at some point take an extended break from driving and returning to the road often puts them at a greater chance of being involved in an accident.

After time off from driving a third of people admitted to being more hesitant and 44 per cent of women and a fifth of men said they felt less confident behind the wheel.

Problems that people encounter when returning to the driving seat include rusty parking skills, forgetting stopping distances and troubles with motorway driving.

One solution being proposed is for out-of-practice motorists to take refresher driving lessons, supported by 87 per cent of people, or even to retake their driving test completely, supported by 62 per cent.

When returning to driving, it is also of major importance that you get a good value car insurance policy to lower the cost of motoring, which may well have risen in your time away from the road.
