Road pricing to ease congestion?

Getting cheap car insurance may become more important than ever if plans to introduce a national road pricing system, designed to tackle congestion, are introduced.

A new report from the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) has suggested road pricing as a solution to the increasing congestion on Britain's roads.

The number of cars on the roads is predicted to rise by up to 36 per cent in the next decade, worsening the congestion problem all too apparent over the Easter period, when millions take to their cars for the long weekend.

"The Easter getaway is a prime example of the problems of increased traffic and congestion," said Anthony Vigor, the author of the IPPR report.

"National road pricing would be an effective way to tackle congestion, but the public are unsure how such a scheme would work," he added.

"If road pricing is to provide the solution, more needs to be done to win the public over."

The proposals come after the opening of the M6 toll road in 2003, designed to ease congestion on the busy West Midlands section of the M6.

Opposition to the project centred on the environmental impacts of building the new road.

Charging for the use of all major roads, however, would not require new roads to be built, but would push up the price of car ownership still further.
