Police to monitor car journeys
Car journeys throughout the UK are to be monitored by police, it has been reported.
Using an extensive network of roadside cameras, a database of vehicle movements in Scotland is to be linked to a computer information centre in London. This will allow police to track journeys the length of the UK.
The network will rely on thousands of road-side cameras to read cars' number plates on all major routes and in towns, cities and petrol station forecourts. Information will be crosschecked against a list of number numbers in order to track car criminals.
Drivers without valid tax disks, MoT or car insurance could also be in the running to be nabbed by police through the camera system.
Human rights lawyer John Scott told the Scotsman that the proposals have sparked objections from human rights campaigners who claim that the scheme represents a further step towards a Big Brother style of living.
"If it is properly used then this can be a valuable crime fighting and crime detecting tool," Mr Scott said.
"However, with the expansion of any system of monitoring like this, there is increased scope for abuse. It's not at all clear to me that there are safeguards in place to prevent this."
