Parking fine rules to change

The government is set to change the rules on clamping and parking fines, promising a better deal for motorists in the future.

The proposed law changes include making wheel-clamping a last resort, rather than a normal course of action for parking attendants faced with an illegally parked car.

The Department of Transport says that it also wants to encourage parking attendants to keep traffic flowing smoothly, rather than simply ticketing cars that are in breach of parking restrictions.

The move by the government department will come as welcome news to those motorists who have become repeated victims of over-zealous parking attendants.

Fewer parking fines may also bring down the escalating cost of motoring, with car insurance, road tax and petrol prices all playing their part.

The changes in the law – not expected until some point in 2007 – may also prevent some of the more bizarre ticketing incidents recently reported in the media, including the ticketing of a hearse during a funeral as well as a bus at a bus stop.
