Online test reveals dangerous drivers

British academics have invented an online system that can judge a driver's risk on the road, with possibly far-reaching consequences for the future of the car insurance industry.

The system, known as the DriverMetrics Driver Risk Index (DRI) allows drivers to complete various psychometric tests that provide clues as to how they might behave on the road.

This allows an accurate reading, the designers claim, of the risk that a driver poses to himself and other road users.

Those with high DRI ratings are therefore regarded as more dangerous drivers, and are therefore more likely to have an accident and make a claim on their car insurance.

For the car insurance industry and commercial vehicle owners alike, the possible uses of the new technology in order to drive down insurance costs are exciting, as how much a driver pays in insurance could be judged by their DRI score.

Having completed the test, which is available online, drivers are also given advice on how they might reduce their score, hopefully promoting safety on Britain's roads.
