Number plate theft highlights need for car insurance
Tue, 20 Dec 2005
A spate of number plate thefts in London has drawn attention to the importance of investing in cheap car insurance.
Police in the capital are warning vehicle owners that fraudulent motorists attempting to find away around the £8 congestion charge are swiping people's number plates in order to fit them to their own cars.
According to the Times, police figures have revealed a number of such incidents in recent months, with around 6,500 number plates stolen since April. The problem is particularly prevalent now that number plates have become more difficult to acquire without proof of ownership.
Across the UK, a total of 26 police forces have reported more than 14,000 number plate thefts, with a number of forces offering special screws to motorists which ruin the plastic plates if someone tries to remove them.
