Nine in ten drivers 'break speed limits'
Tue, 31 Jan 2006
A new poll has suggested that a total of nine out of ten motorists regularly break the UK speed limits on motorways and dual carriageways.
Almost three quarters of drivers questioned also admitted to speeding in built-up areas, the Auto Trader magazine survey found.
According to the poll, Brits would rather see a more flexible speed policy put in place that would allow motorists to drive at higher speeds when roads are quiet.
The figures come as opposition mounts towards the increasing number of speed cameras on Britain's roads, with more than a third saying they had been snapped by a speed camera at some point.
"Drivers know as if by instinct that speed cameras are the wrong road safety policy," Paul Smith, founder of the Safe Speed road safety campaign, told the Metro.
"They have failed to save lives. They have failed to convince the public. They have even failed to stop us speeding."
Nearly three quarters of drivers say that speed cameras distract their attention from the road, with many critics believing that the speed traps are the government's way of generating money rather than helping to prevent accidents or lowing car insurance costs.
