Motorway terror ride results in arrest
Mon, 13 Feb 2006
A motorist has been arrested following what has been described as a "terrifying" incident on the motorway.
After causing "seven miles of chaos" along the M4, which resulted in a number of drivers having to make a car insurance claim, the unnamed driver was finally arrested by police at the Membury services in Wiltshire.
Carrying a petrified passenger, the motorist sped at 80 miles per hour the wrong way down the motorway, causing several other vehicles to swerve or collide in their efforts to avoid the speeding car.
"This driver left seven miles of chaos," said Sergeant Glenn Powell, who managed to slow down the driver.
"How no serious casualty or fatality has occurred we will never know."
The motorist was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, while a woman in the passenger seat was taken to hospital in "an extreme state of shock".
