Motorists urged to check oil
Thu, 13 Oct 2005
Research by car care company, Comma, has revealed that one in five motorists are unaware of how to properly care for their vehicle.
Drivers surveyed on how familiar they were with their car engines were asked to identify various engine parts.
According to Commas survey, many motorists admitted to being confused about basic motor maintenance checks, including oil, screen wash and coolant reserves.
Although 79 per cent were able to correctly identify the oil cap, dipstick and screen wash reservoir, one in five motorists were apparently clueless about which part of the engine was which.
Half of those who answered incorrectly confused the screen wash reservoir with the coolant reserve, while many were unable to identify the oil cap.
The car care company also found that motorists were failing to check their oil regularly; an oversight which could lead to serious and expensive engine problems.
Motorists who fail to check engine oil could also risk loosing money if car insurance policies do not cover this simple car maintenance omission.
