Motorists go for speed over being green

Tue, 21 Mar 2006

The driving force behind which car to buy is more often performance than its environmental impact, according to a new study.

AA Personal Loans has found that just 31 per cent of motorists consider the environment when buying a car compared with 53 per cent who were driven by performance and 40 per cent by practicality.

Furthermore, of the estimated six million motorists who will replace their cars in 2006 only six per cent are planning to replace their car with one that is more environmentally friendly.

This is the same amount of people who want a new car that packs more sex appeal, is loaded with the latest gadgets or will look more impressive on the drive way.

Friends of the Earth transport campaigner Tony Bosworth said: "The government must do more to encourage people to drive greener cars and cut the pollution causing climate change.

"The chancellor can make a start next week by increasing car tax for gas guzzling vehicles and cutting it for fuel efficient models."

A fifth of drivers choosing a new car were opting for fewer mechanical problems while 22 per cent want a motor that puts them in a cheap car insurance group.
