Motorists warned over sleepy driving
Tue, 11 Apr 2006
Motorists have been warned of the dangers of having a snooze at the wheel, as 13 million motorists are expected to gamble with their lives and others' by ignoring the risks this Easter.
Almost one in ten motorists polled in the latest Green Flag study admit they have at some time fallen momentarily asleep whilst at the wheel, while more than half claimed they had driven whilst "very tired".
The risks of driving whilst tired are well documented, with drivers more than 50 per cent more likely to be killed or seriously injured if they fall asleep at the wheel.
But as the Easter holidays approach, many people will be looking to drive long distances at the weekend, with many setting off very early in the morning or arriving late at night.
Nigel Charlesworth, spokesperson for Green Flag said: "No matter how well youve planned your trip, it's absolutely vital that you never set-off if youre tired. Put it off until youve had plenty of sleep."
Even a small dip in concentration can cause a crash or bump, meaning many will have to claim on their car insurance thus pushing up their premiums.
