Motoring costs stack up for young drivers

The ever increasing cost of car insurance, among other motoring costs, is putting many young people off driving and owning a car, a new survey has found.

The survey found that more than 40 per cent of young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 do not have a driver's licence, with the costs associated with owning a car the main reason cited for not taking lessons.

It was also found to be the main reason for why some 25 per cent of young drivers with driver's licences do not own a car, with many simply using their parents' cars as a cheaper alternative.

The need for independent transport has led many young people to opt for cheaper alternatives in car ownership – with the survey finding that over one in ten young drivers had thought seriously about sharing the costs of a new car with friends.

The current high prices of petrol are unlikely to help the situation, fuel costs adding to car insurance premiums and road tax to made car ownership out of the question for many.
