Mobile security device tackles car theft
A new security system centred around motorist's mobile phones has been developed by the Richmond Design & Marketing Group.
The Auto-txt system works by identifying car owners through their mobile phones, thereby 'revolutionising' the fight against car crime.
If a car is stolen, the system will recognise it as such by identifying that the owner's mobile phone is not present when the vehicle's engine is switched on.
In addition, the technology can be used by police when following a stolen car. Auto-txt allows police to track the vehicle, stopping it from being restarted by the thief using remote wireless technology once the ignition has been switch off.
"Being able to remotely prevent a vehicle from being started using a Cat 5 approved device will help us enormously in the fight against stolen vehicle crime and may lead to a reduction in the need for police pursuits," said Jim Hammond from the Association of Chief Police Officers.
"Category 5 is now the only stolen vehicle theft standard that is both supported by the insurance industry and conforms to police policy," he added.
According to the Association of British Insurers, car theft through car key robbery has risen by 80 per cent since 2002, highlighting the need for adequate car insurance.
