Local authorities criticised over 'driver choices'
Local authorities need to do more to encourage British motorists to make more environmentally friendly driving choices, a report from a drivers' group says.
According to the report from the RAC Foundation, councils and government authorities need to do more to support greener vehicles such as hybrid cars, and choose alternative forms of transport when appropriate.
Their findings showed that an estimated one in five (20 per cent) of all car journeys undertaken in the UK are unnecessary.
Speaking at the Local Government Association conference, RAC Foundation executive director Edmund King said: "The car is the personal choice of the majority and decision-makers need engage seriously with the practical and emotional influences underpinning this if they want to persuade motorists to make different travel choices."
He added that unnecessary journeys like many 'school-runs' were causing increased congestion on Britain's roads.
So far the government has tried to encourage drivers to move to hybrid cars by offering reduced road tax, while some insurance companies are considering offering reduced car insurance rates for greener car drivers.
