Holiday drivers failing to check car insurance

Mon, 11 Jul 2005

A third of Brits heading abroad this summer will be driving to Europe, but almost half of them will fail to check that their car insurance has them covered.

According to a survey by the Post Office, 42 per cent of those driving to sunnier climes over the summer months will not confirm that their policy covers them for driving abroad before heading off.

Only a third of the 8.8 million people expected to take their cars on holiday said they had checked to ensure they were fully insured, the research revealed.

"Holidaymakers are choosing to drive to the Continent to save both time and money, but many may be risking holiday headaches if they don't check their policies first," Mike Smith, head of car insurance at the Post Office, told the Evening Standard.

"However, without adequate car insurance it could end up costing you more than you bargained for, with any money saved on air fares lost on costly emergency repairs if something goes wrong during the trip."

More than half of those surveyed thought they would drive up to 500 miles during their holiday, whilst 14 per cent expected to notch up more than 1,000 miles.
