Green party slams 4x4s

The UK's Green Party has called for increased taxation on 4x4 vehicles used in the capital.

Recent figures suggest the off-road vehicles are gaining popularity in London and are expected to account for 16 per cent of new car sales in 2006.

But the Greens believe that a new top rate road tax as well as increased congestion and parking charges for such vehicles should be imposed to encourage people to consider more environmentally friendly choices.

Achieving lower emissions, the party claims, is a major priority.

Green Party member of the London Assembly, Jenny Jones, said: "The government [is] unwilling to take action on climate change, so it is up to us in London to do something to stop the rapid growth in larger engine vehicles."

She added: "We need to double the congestion charge for these gas-guzzling monsters and introduce a sliding scale of residents parking charges which reward low emission cars and punish the polluters."

Residents in the capital are also encouraged to consider the impact on car insurance costs resulting from their vehicle choice.
