F1 2008 breakaway off the cards

Tue, 28 Mar 2006

The group of Formula One teams that had threatened to form a breakaway series have signed up for the 2008 grand prix season

The five teams that make up the Grand Prix Manufacturers Association (GPMA) have submitted entry forms for the FIA world championship in 2008.

However, the dispute between the GPMA and the FIA has not been concluded and the rush to meet the deadline was spurred on by the FIA threat that failing to do so would mean the group had no voice on technical specifications for 2008

A GPMA statement said: "The five teams, through the Grand Prix Manufacturers Association, have submitted their entry forms for the 2008 FIA Formula One world championship.

"The teams look forward to the FIA's acceptances and to beginning discussions with the FIA in order to finalise the regulations for 2008."

It added: "Significant progress has been made in the negotiations between the GPMA and the commercial rights holder, and discussions are ongoing."

The next stop on the F1 calendar will be Melbourne this weekend for the Australian Grand Prix.
