Drivers turn to friends for tips

People looking to buy a new car are more likely to trust the opinions of friends and family than a garage or car salesperson, according to new research.

The Halifax study shows that 52 per cent of people would turn to family for advice, but less than a quarter would ask a car salesperson.

People are also more likely to turn to male friends, rather than female friends, with 41 per cent saying they would ask for manly advice, but only 18 per cent thinking about feminine guidance.

Ian Corfield, of Halifax, said: "Our research shows we still rely heavily on our family and friends for advice when it comes to buying cars.

"Other than buying a house, cars are probably the most expensive purchases we make. It's important to get the right advice."

He added: "It is worrying that nearly one in five people said they wouldn't seek advice."

When looking for car insurance it is also important to not only to ask friends for advice, but also shop around different companies to find the best price and the best cover.
