Councils prepare for World Cup drunk drivers

Wed, 07 Jun 2006

With beer sales expected to soar by as much as 40 per cent on days of England games local councils are bracing themselves for a spate of drink fuelled accidents.

Many games are scheduled for early afternoon starts, which inevitably means that people will start the carnival atmosphere early, enjoying a few drinks in the summer sun.

However, far too many motorists are underestimating how long it takes for their body to purge alcohol from its system, leaving many over the limit.

Councillor Andy Sutton of the Local Government Association, said: "Pubs are expecting to sell millions of extra pints every time England take to the field.

"The worry is that this will lead to a significant increase in drink-related accidents and fatalities on our roads.

"Have a few drinks for a two o'clock kick-off and you'll probably be over the limit to drive that evening. Drink heavily for an 8 o'clock kick-off and you may not be able to drive the next morning."

Some 27 million pub visits are estimated to have been made to watch matches during the 2002 World Cup. However, with games at more civilised times of the day this time around even more pub visits are expected.

But leaving aside concerns about safety, both of themselves and other road users, drink drivers face a lengthy ban and fine, potentially leaving them heavily out of pocket.

Furthermore, most insurers dramatically hike car insurance premiums following a motoring conviction, underlining how expensive and potentially lethal drink driving can be.
