Chitty Chitty banned banned

Thu, 12 Jan 2006

A motorist caught behind the wheel without a licence has been given six penalty points and fined £175, it has been reported.

This was no ordinary motorist however.

The accused - 1960s star Heather Ripley, who played Jemima in the classic movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - spent most of her ninth year filming the famous film featuring Dick Van Dyke and Anne Howes.

Despite her adventures as a child in the fantasy flying car however, it seems that reality - where car insurance and documentation are both needed in order to drive legally - has still failed to rub off on Ms Ripley.

The 45-year-old, who already had six points on her licence, said that her application for a renewed licence must have got lost in the post.

"She hadn't appreciated she should not have driven until the licence was actually received by her," commented defence lawyer Mike Tavendale.

The mother of two is now jobless and living off benefits. She spends most of her time as a peace campaigner.
