C-charging may go nationwide

Congestion charging, like that introduced in London in February 2003, may be introduced around the country, it has been reported.
Local authorities in areas including Greater Manchester, Bristol, Tyne and Wear and the West Midlands have been assessing the feasibility of implementing the scheme in their areas.
Measures introduced by the transport secretary Alistair Darling yesterday have revealed that seven authorities around the UK have been granted a shared total of £7 million to trial new ways in which to tackle congestion.
Speaking at the annual CBI conference in London, Mr Darling said: "One of the biggest threats to economic expansion we face in the next ten to 15 years is congestion on the roads in our towns and cities.
"Congestion is bad for business, frustrates motorists and hurts local economies. Continued investment is essential."
Under the system, drivers are charged for using inner-city roads at peak times of the day, in a bid to cut traffic congestion, lower pollution levels and reduce accident rates, thereby also affecting car insurance costs.
