Cars 'more threatening than terrorism'

Thu, 01 Dec 2005

The risk of dying on the road in developed countries is almost 400 times the threat of death posed by international terrorists, a new study shows.

Research in Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries between 1994 and 2003 indicates that the death toll from crashes is almost 400 times higher than the rate of deaths from terrorism.

UK drivers are facing particularly treacherous conditions on the roads at the moment, as the country looks set to endure its coldest winter in a decade. Ice, fog and snow in many regions has already been the cause of accidents and drivers are being urged to check that all their car insurance details are in order before travelling.

The researchers found that 33 acts of international terrorism occurred during the study period, accounting for 3064 deaths, while the road deaths total was 390 times higher.

The authors, from Otago University in New Zealand, stress that the research is not intended to minimise the emotional, economic, and political impacts of terrorism, but is designed to raise awareness of the dangers posed by road traffic accidents.

An estimated 140 people die on the UK's roads every fortnight and motorists are reminded that, as winter conditions make driving more difficult, it is vital to invest in comprehensive car insurance in case of accident.
