Car insurance fraudsters 'causing car crashes'

A new kind of car crime is on the rise, causing huge concern for motorists and car insurance providers alike.

Criminals are now looking to make some fast money by purposefully causing a car accident with another motorist, and then making extortionate claims against the innocent driver's car insurance, claiming thousands of pounds worth of damage and personal injury.

Added costs may also be included such as the cost of a replacement car and lost working hours, bumping up the total cost of the claim even more.

Insurers believe that there currently may be more than 10,000 of intentional car accidents a year, and the fact that potentially tens of thousands of pounds can be extracted from insurance companies in this way is clearly not putting committed fraudsters off the obviously dangerous practice.

The criminals are often able to get away with the scam because they own and operate car hire firms and vehicle repair shops that can verify the criminals' claims.

Drivers are advised to be wary of such fraudsters, and never to admit to fault regarding an accident if they are in doubt.
