Car enthusiasts defend right to meet
Mon, 12 Sep 2005
A number of car enthusiasts have defended their right to meet after police prevented them from gathering in their usual meeting-place.
Drivers arriving at Coomber Lane, Beddington, last Thursday found themselves denied access by a line of police.
After moving to another site nearby, the lovers of souped-up, modified cars expressed their feelings of defiance towards the police campaign of zero tolerance on their meetings, or 'cruises.'
James Kemmitt, who drives from Sydenham to Croydon every week to look at the assembled vehicles, told the Croydon Advertiser: "Everybody will be back down there [on Coomber Way] when the police don't have the money to stay."
The police action follows numerous complaints from local residents about reckless driving and speeding, loud music and the noise of the assembled engines at the car enthusiasts' cruises.
Another driver who had been turned away from Coomber Lane, Andrew McLeary, said it was unfair and misleading to consider all the car enthusiasts as reckless 'boy racers.'
All car lovers, whether or not they enjoy modified cars, can protect their special vehicle with car insurance cover.
