Car crime soars in wintry weather
Mon, 30 Jan 2006
So-called 'frosting' robberies could cause tens of thousands of car owners to claim on their car insurance this winter, it has been revealed.
Research by Sainsbury's Bank has indicated that 121,730 households have been the target of a 'frosting' theft over the past five years, with opportunist thieves taking advantage of motorists leaving keys in the ignition in order to defrost the vehicles.
And the bank estimates that a further 24,346 motorists will fall victim to the practice this winter, particularly with the recent temperature dip.
"More advanced security systems, locks and immobilisers have meant that it has become more difficult to steal cars. However, many thieves are opportunists and could strike if you leave your car running unattended," said Richard Clark from Sainsbury's Bank.
"We are concerned that the predicted extreme cold weather will result in more people taking the risk and becoming victims of frosting."
In addition, the study also found that UK drivers are putting themselves at risk by failing to take precautions when driving in severe weather conditions.
A large majority of motorists admitted that they did not regularly check their vehicles' tyres or batteries through the winter months.
