Car clubs to cut congestion

Congestion-cutting car rental membership clubs are set to soar in popularity over the next year, it has been claimed.

The government-backed scheme, which allows members to rent a car on an hourly basis, is being heralded as a popular way to reduce levels of traffic on the UK's roads, with people 'sharing' vehicles rather than owning them.

Car rental clubs also offer a solution to the problem of a lack of parking space in new housing developments, with many families opting to own only one car and renting another when they need it.

Andrew Valentine, the founder of car rental company Streetcar, told the Telegraph: "There are clear environmental benefits. About 20 per cent of people who join us give up a car.

"People drive less because they don't have a car outside their door and tend to use other types of transport."

Since its launch in April 2004, Streetcar has extended its operations to Brighton and Southampton and is predicting a six-fold increase in business in 2006.

It is estimated that the average motorist can save around £3,000 a year by taking part in a car rental scheme once parking, car insurance and maintenance costs are taken into account.
