Calls for ban on smoking whilst driving
Tue, 14 Mar 2006
A fifth of drivers who smoke whilst at the wheel have admitted their habit endangers them and others, whilst a third said smoking distracted them whilst driving.
Calls for a ban on smoking whilst driving have been boosted by the publication of the new survey conducted by Auto Trader, which found that two thirds of drivers would support such a ban.
The survey also found that 61 per cent of the survey's respondents and a third of smokers would prefer to buy a smoke-free car.
"This is very positive and reflects the changing attitudes to smoking," commented Amanda Sandford, research manager of anti-smoking lobby group ASH.
"Smoking is undoubtedly a distraction to drivers - even just lighting up is a distraction - when you take into account the health risks, the potential for fire hazards."
Last Saturday two men were killed in West Bromwich after petrol fumes were ignited by a cigarette one was smoking.
Although a ban on smoking whilst driving comes into force in Scotland later this month, drivers everywhere are reminded that quality car insurance will help protect them all over the UK in the event of any kind of accident.
