British drivers urged to remember speed limit
Wed, 31 May 2006
British drivers returning to the UK from their foreign jaunts frequently forget to revert to British speed limits, risking an accident and points on their licence, according to new research from Privilege car insurance.
Some 28 per cent of UK drivers admitted to breaking the speed limit after returning home from abroad, largely due to the confusing nature of European speed limits.
Indeed there is no pan-European standard, with a limit of 75mph in Spain, to virtually no limit in Germany. As a result, half of the respondents have called for a Europe-wide standard speed limit to be imposed.
Having points on your licence can dramatically raise car insurance premiums, especially for younger drivers, so motorists are urged to stick to the limit to avoid paying through the nose.
Ian Parker, managing director of Privilege car insurance, said: "With high numbers flocking to the World Cup and on holidays in continental Europe this summer, UK drivers may find themselves getting used to higher speed limits so should take extra care on their return to the UK.
"We know how tempting it can be to drive fast where speed limits are less rigid than in the UK, but almost one in ten accidents happen when motorists are speeding so drivers need to be mindful of the speed limit to reduce the likelihood of accidents."
So-called "less-safe drivers" with less than four years no-claims bonus were found to be the most likely to speed on their return from Europe, despite the fact that they can least afford to.
