Back seat drivers flout seat belt laws
Car passengers are ignoring the risks of a serious injury by not wearing seatbelts, research has claimed.
One in three passengers still do not belt up in the back seat, according to figures from a major insurer.
London was amongst one of the worst areas on record, with less than half of the capital's residents wearing a seatbelt in the back. The West Country was found to be the most safety conscious and law abiding area, with three quarters of passengers belting up.
This is despite strong evidence to suggest that wearing a seatbelt can save a passenger's life if the vehicle is involved in an accident.
According to the research, motorists are also ignoring other simple safety advice such as adjusting headrests and mirrors.
Although around half of those surveyed had been involved in a car accident, a vast majority do not think to adjust their own or a passenger's headrest to limit neck injuries.
