Average speed 15mph

The average speed of a car on the UK roads is 15mph, according to new research.

Oxford University researchers studied the journeys of 23,000 people and on average people travel 58 minutes a day by any means of transport, reports the Times.

Department of Transport figures show Brits spend 37 minutes each day in their cars, adding up to over 15 months of their working lives.

Travelling at an average speed of 15.2 mph was down to many factors, including being stuck in traffic jams, waiting at junctions and the final walk from the car to the destination.

Being stuck in jams is often cited by drivers as a reason for taking risks that could lead to accidents and claims on car insurance policies.

Drivers across the Atlantic are also far from speeding as a sister research programme found that door-to-door speeds in California were faster, but far from hitting breakneck speeds, at 24.3 mph.
