Ad campaign targets speeding motorists
A ruthless advertising campaign aimed at persuading drivers to cut their speed has been launched across Scotland.
Hard-hitting images of a badly broken leg will be fronting the campaign, which the Scottish government hopes will help to reduce accident rates caused by speeding, thereby cutting car insurance premiums for Scotland's drivers.
Other images will include a crashed vehicle with a 'baby on board' sticker in view and depictions of a young man standing at his girlfriend's graveside. Each ad will end carry the tag line: "The real penalty for speeding."
The £650,000 worth of advertisements will appear in the form of billboard posters as well as through TV and radio media.
Scotland's justice minister, Cathy Jamieson, said: "Speeding has wider implications than a fine or penalty points. It can have life-threatening consequences.
"This campaign aims to make speeding drivers more aware of the human costs associated with their driving behaviour so that they drive within safe limits at all times and help us make Scotland's roads safer for everyone."
Recent figures released by the Scottish Executive revealed that 13,738 accidents took place on Scotland's roads in 2004, resulting in 3,019 deaths and serious injuries.
