£20 C-Charge touted for "gas guzzlers"

Drivers of large "gas guzzling" cars could see their motoring costs rise further if a new policy is implemented.
The Alliance Against Urban 4x4s is calling for SUVs and 4x4s to be liable for a higher £20 congestion charge when driving in central London.
Yesterday (June 14th), the alliance, joined by representatives from the Green Party, handed Mayor of London Ken Livingston a 5,000 signature petition calling for all vehicles that emit more than 225g/km of carbon dioxide to pay the additional £12 a day.
For motorists that regularly need to enter the congestion charge zone, this could cause their driving expenses to rise significantly, encouraging many to seek out cheaper car insurance.
The alliance estimates that the additional charge would raise £34 million a year, which it argues should be reinvested in public transport. It also claims that the £20 cost could reduce the number of large vehicles in the zone by up to 40 per cent.
"Our report shows the change would be good value, paying back the costs of implementing the higher rate quickly, and raising extra revenue to improve transport in London after that," a spokeswoman claimed.
