'Too easy to skid' on British roads

Motorists should take care not to skid on Britain's roads, a government survey has warned.

Efforts to prevent pot-holes and rough roads may have improved the standard of the UK's roads to a higher level than ever before, but their anti-skid qualities should not be forgotten, the Department of Transport report concluded.

Despite improving the percentage of roads that are dangerously slippy when wet from 25 per cent last year to 20 per cent in the current report, motoring organisations are worried by the continued high risk of accidents in wet conditions.

"Tough upcoming spending rounds could undermine the recent good work," Paul Walters of the AA said, referring to concerns that the overall condition of Britain's roads could deteriorate in the future.

A recent report published by the Ashpalt Industry Alliance suggests that UK's road works require £1.8 billion of spending, an increase from its previous estimate of £800 million.

The same survey concluded that 85 per cent of councils in England and Wales were not spending enough on the nation's roads infrastructure, making it even more important for motorists and motorcyclists to make sure their car or bike insurance is up to date.
