'Speed kills' ad man caught speeding
The man behind the 'speed kills' road safety advertising campaign has been accused of speeding on his motorbike.
Trevor Shepherd, the boss of the advertising agency behind the high-impact campaign, was issued with a fixed penalty ticket after being caught travelling at 46 mph in a 30 mph zone in Cheshire on his Suzuki motorbike.
Mr Shepherd has vowed to appeal against the fine, arguing that the police officer who recorded him speeding using a handheld device should have been visible from the road, rather than being hidden from view.
However, Cheshire police have denied that there is any legal requirement for their patrols to be visible.
Reacting to the news, Paul Smith, the found of anti-speed camera campaigners Speed Safe, said that Mr Shepherd had become a victim of the "pointless and erroneous" campaign he had help publicise.
"This is the reality of modern speeding offences," he said.
"Responsible drivers everywhere are at significant risk of prosecution even though they are driving perfectly safely frequently they are prosecuted despite the fact that their speed is entirely safe and appropriate for the immediate conditions.
"Sometimes they are prosecuted by dodgy equipment or procedures, or when the speed limit isn't even properly signed."
Speeding prosecutions can be bad news for car or bike insurance premiums too, with speeding convictions reflecting poorly on driver safety and the likelihood of a claim.
