Rossi extends Yamaha contract
Tue, 02 Aug 2005
The Yamaha Motor Company has announced that Valentino Rossi has agreed to ride their bikes for at least another year.
The six-time world champion has been with Yamaha since the end of the 2003 season and has dominated MotoGP ever since.
I have a fantastic relationship with this factory and my team crew, who have worked so hard to make the M1 as competitive as it is now, and it just made sense to stay with Yamaha for another year, he is reported to have said.
Rossi is now 120 points clear of fellow Italian Marco Melandri in the race for the title, after he signed off for the summer this weekend with his eighth win of the season.
The world-conqueror has clearly done wonders for Yamahas fortunes, much to the disappointment of Honda, with whom his success began.
The partnership with Valentino is the key point that will now allow us to proceed with our total MotoGP strategy for 2006, Yamahas managing director Lin Jarvis is reported to have said.
Rossis original sponsors, Honda, have recently become the first company to launch a manufacturer-backed bike insurance scheme, aimed at covering its popular off-road machines.
