Record cyclists spur bike insurance necessity

Wed, 21 Jun 2006

With National Bike Week currently underway Brits are ditching their cars for their bikes in record numbers.

Indeed, figures revealed that there were 15 per cent more bike trips on the National Cycle Network in 2005 than 2004, as more and more people turn to cheaper and more environmentally friendly forms of transport.

However, with a proliferation of the number of cyclists on Britain's roads the chances of accidents or theft has increased, leading price comparison site insuresupermarket.com to urge riders to ensure their bike is adequately insured.

Richard Mason, director at insuresupermarket.com said: "With the increasing number of bikes now on the road and more people cycling to work as an alternative to using the car or public transport, it's important to consider how well insured your bike is, just as you would when parking a car all day.

"There are three types of insurance options to consider when cycling – bike, third party and personal accident cover. A number of home contents insurance providers will allow you to add cycle insurance to their standard contents cover. If you own a bicycle, it's worth checking this when purchasing your contents insurance as the cost of this cover can vary."

Indeed the significance of personal liability and personal accident cover should not be underestimated.

In the event of an accident the rider could be held financially liable for any injury of damage inflicted, which depending on the severity of the accident could be ruinously expensive.
