Police get tough on illegal motorbike use

Yorkshire polices forces are set to clamp down on the dangerous use of off-road motorcycles, after receiving hundreds of complaints from concerned local residents.

The motorbikes that appear largely to blame are 'scrambler' off-road bikes and miniature bikes known as 'minimotos', with both being used in an increasingly anti-social manner according to police.

The machines are frequently being used without adequate bike insurance or road tax, putting both the riders and members of the public at considerable risk.

Commenting on the new police clampdown, acting chief inspector Martin Lister told the Yorkshire Post that specially trained officers were being employed to deal with the problem, with many vehicles already seized and formal warnings issued.

"It's not just about nuisance behaviour – it's also about safety," Mr Lister said.

"Many of the riders are simply unaware of the danger they are putting themselves and others in by riding these vehicles in such an irresponsible manner, most users don't even bother wearing basic protective clothing."

He added that parents were also responsible for ensuring that their children were not using motorbikes illegally, and that they had adequate bike insurance cover.
