Police clamp down on pocket bikes

Police have announced that they are to begin clamping down on the riders of mini motorbikes who are riding illegally on British roads.

The miniature bikes, also know as 'pocket bikes', have seen a growth in popularity over recent months, and are often regarded as toys by teenagers still too young to drive a car or ride a motorcycle.

However, officially they are classed as motorbikes, which means that it is illegal to ride one on a road without a licence, road tax and full bike insurance.

Like other vehicles on the road, they are also required to have brakes and lights.

Thames Valley Police have clamped down on riders of the bikes in Newbury and West Berkshire, where they have been deemed anti-social and dangerous.

Local Roads Policing Manager Malcolm Collis said illegal riders risked having the bike confiscated.

"People caught using their mini-motos illegally face having their bikes seized, points on their license and antisocial behaviour orders," he said, according to Click News.

"I can quite understand the attraction of these types of machines but all we ask is that people use them in a safe and legal manner with due consideration for other people," he added.

Illegal riding could also prove expensive for the rider in question, as police also have the power to impose a fine of up to £600.
