New safety measures for bikers
Thu, 28 Jul 2005
The Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) has embarked on a campaign to make crash barriers more suitable for motorcyclists.
Crash barriers are typically designed to guide and restrain four wheeled vehicles, from cars to heavy goods vehicles, and are not currently tested with bikes in mind.
They therefore offer no protection to motorcyclists, nor do European laws state that they should do.
Barriers actually put riders who come off their bikes at an even greater risk than they would be were there nothing there to collide with.
Of all road furniture crash barriers pose the greatest threat to motorcyclists, and we need to make planners aware of this, MAGs Director Of Public Affairs, Trevor Baird told MCN.
Every year in the UK there are more than 28,000 casualties following motorbike accidents, leaving us in no doubt that motorbike users are vulnerable on British roads.
These statistics highlight the importance of getting adequate bike insurance.
