Motorcyclists protest over EC licensing

Hundreds of motorcyclists from across Europe congregated in Brussels on Saturday to demonstrate against proposals for a third European Commission (EC) driving licence.

Motorcycle Action Group (MAG UK) teamed up with the British Motorcyclists Federation (BMF) and Motor Cycle News in the protest outside EC headquarters.

Those who oppose the licence argue that the proposals limit the access to motorbikes for young and new drivers and make it harder to gain licences.

They also claim that the scheme has ignored European statistics which show that experience on a bike, rather than age, is a key factor in reducing the number of accidents.

MAG president, Ian Mutch, said that those anti the new licence had been lobbying UK members of the European parliament for the last few months.

He also pointed out how important such demonstrations were in order for politicians to gauge public opinion.

"Every one who made the run to Brussels should give themselves a king size pat on the back for voting in the most empathic way for the defence of motorcycling," he said.
