Motorcycles to use bus lanes
A trial scheme introduced last year allowing motorbikes to use certain bus lanes in Northern Ireland (NI) is to be made permanent, it has been announced.
Aiming to lower the risk of accidents for motorbike users and create more road space, the initiative is also likely to cut bike insurance costs for motorists in the country.
The Department for Regional Development's Roads Service made the motorcycle scheme a permanent feature after considering concerns raised by bicycle users, who claimed that motorbike drivers would use the lanes to break the speed limit.
Gary Olphert, from the Northern Ireland Motorcycle Action group, told the Belfast Telegraph that the decision was "fantastic news".
"There is overwhelming support for it among motorcyclists across the country, particularly in Belfast where most of the bus lanes are," he said.
"It encourages motorcyclists out of their cars, and so helps cut congestion."
A review of the scheme will be made after a two year period, following a decision made in 2002 to allow taxis in the country to use the bus lanes.
